'Yellow' Wildfire Alert Issued As Spring Season Approaches

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS), and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have issued a joint appeal for heightened public awareness regarding the risk of wildfires.

Environmental experts have designated a 'Yellow' or moderate wildfire risk status for all areas containing heather, gorse, and dead grasses. This default warning will remain in place until the conclusion of the wildfire season in September, unless upgraded further by DAERA. Officials warned that these fires endanger biodiversity, property, and infrastructure, while posing significant risks to respiratory and cardiovascular health, particularly among children and vulnerable groups.

It is a legal offence to burn or destroy uncultivated vegetation between 15 April and 31 August. Landowners are advised that restrictions and consent requirements apply to activities that could damage Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI), and they should consult the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) if they are uncertain of their obligations.

DAERA Minister Andrew Muir said: "We all saw the damage that was done across Northern Ireland last year with devastating wildfires in the Mournes, Slieve Beagh and the Sperrins. I would urge everyone to act responsibly by heeding the advice, remaining vigilant and swiftly reporting to the Police anyone they suspect of maliciously starting fires in our countryside."

NIFRS Area Commander Ryan Thompson added: "Last year, we responded to a significant number of wildfires throughout the spring and summer months, which placed intense pressure on our Firefighters and our Service. As we approach this period again, we urge everyone to support their Fire & Rescue Service by staying alert to wildfire risks and acting responsibly in the countryside."

PSNI Superintendent Chris Hamill reminded the public of the legal consequences of arson: "Deliberately setting a wildfire is a criminal offence for which you can face prosecution. Where it is found that a fire has been maliciously started, it will be fully investigated by police, and when identified, those responsible can expect to be arrested and brought before court."

Safety Advice for the Public:

• Avoid using open fires in the countryside and only use barbecues in designated areas.

• Ensure all smoking materials and barbecues are fully extinguished before disposal.

• Never throw cigarette ends from vehicle windows and park considerately to ensure emergency access is not blocked.

• If a fire is spotted, report it immediately to the Fire & Rescue Service. Leave the area as soon as possible and do not attempt to tackle any fire that cannot be extinguished with a single bucket of water.

• Anyone carrying out prescribed burning must do so within the legal period, obtain necessary permissions, and notify the NIFRS when the burn begins and ends.
