Economy Minister Launches Consultation on First Regional Aviation Policy

Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has launched a consultation on a new Aviation Policy, marking the first time a regional strategy of this kind has been developed for the North.

The policy arrives as passenger figures at all three local airports continue to grow, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Recognising the importance of air travel for an island economy, the Minister expressed a desire to build on this positive momentum to support foreign direct investment, tourism, and trade.

A key focus of the consultation is the development of a route development scheme aimed at enhancing connectivity. The Department for the Economy is currently investing in City of Derry Airport and is working toward the restoration of direct flights to North America.

The Minister also reiterated the call for the British Government to abolish Air Passenger Duty (APD) to create a level playing field across Ireland. To support this, the Department proposes commissioning fresh research to strengthen the evidence base regarding the impact of removing the tax.

Other core issues outlined for consideration in the consultation include:

• Decarbonisation and sustainability within the sector.

• Skills development for the aviation workforce.

• Support for the reinstatement of duty-free sales at local airports.

• The establishment of a dedicated Aviation Advisory Group.

Discussing the need for a specific regional approach, Dr Archibald said: "While civil aviation remains a reserved matter, it is crucial for us to have our own regional aviation policy to address local priorities and ensure that the unique needs of our communities and economy are effectively represented. This Aviation Policy will be the first of its kind for the north reflecting the importance I am attaching to air travel."

The consultation period is set to run for eight weeks. Members of the public and stakeholders can access the document and submit their responses via the Department's website until the closing date of 22 May 2026.
