NIFRS Urges Easter Fire Safety Vigilance

As Easter approaches, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is urging households to take simple precautions to reduce the risk of fire during the festivities.

With more cooking, trips away and time spent outdoors, the holiday can bring an increased chance of accidental fires if basic safety steps are overlooked.

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) Group Commander David Shortt said: "Easter is a time for family, celebrations and people coming together, but it's also important that we keep fire safety in mind. We're encouraging everyone to take a few simple steps to keep your loved ones safe this holiday.

"House fire fatalities are at their highest in 25 years where smoking is the leading cause and cooking still remains the number 1 cause of accidental fires in the home. If you are out visiting during the holidays and you are concerned about an elderly relative, neighbour or someone who may be vulnerable, please consider referring them for a Free Home Fire Safety Check through our website, www.nifrs.org.

"We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Easter from everyone at NIFRS"

Cooking remains the leading cause of accidental fires at home. Don't leave pans unattended, keep tea towels and oven gloves away from hobs, avoid cooking if you've been drinking alcohol, and always switch off cookers and hobs when you've finished.

Check your smoke alarms

Working smoke alarms save lives. Ensure you have one on every level of your home and test them before starting any Easter cooking.

Be careful with decorations

Keep candles away from Easter decorations, baskets, cards and soft furnishings, and never leave them unattended.

Outdoor safety

If you're picnicking or having a BBQ, be mindful of weather conditions. Avoid open fires in dry, windy weather, position BBQs well away from fences and sheds, and if you spot a fire in the countryside, call 999 immediately.

Travelling during the holidays

Before heading away, unplug and switch off unnecessary electrical appliances. Wherever you're staying, identify the nearest exit in case of an emergency and check that smoke alarms are fitted and working, including in private accommodation.

NIFRS wishes everyone a safe and happy Easter and encourages those concerned about vulnerable friends, neighbours or relatives to make use of its Free Home Fire Safety Check.
