Police Issue Road Safety Appeal As Motorcyclist Numbers Rise
The Police Service of Northern Ireland is encouraging increased caution on the roads as the arrival of spring brings longer days and improved weather conditions.
Head of Road Policing, Chief Inspector Celeste Simpson, noted that this time of year typically sees a higher volume of motorcycles on the network. She highlighted the specific vulnerability of riders, noting that they possess significantly less protection than those in motor vehicles. According to police statistics, motorcyclists are 125 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a collision than a car driver for the same distance travelled. Drivers are being urged to pay particular attention at junctions and to double-check for motorcycles before emerging onto roads. Inattention and careless driving remain primary factors in serious crashes.
Motorcyclists are also being advised to ensure their bikes and safety equipment are in good working order, especially if they are taking them out for the first time this season. The police stressed the importance of riding to suit weather conditions and respecting all other road users.
To support these safety efforts, officers will be engaging with the public through vehicle checkpoints and a series of BikeSafe workshops.
Chief Inspector Simpson added: "We want everyone who uses the road to be safe. We all share the road and that means sharing the responsibility. Slow down, pay greater attention to your surroundings and never drive or get on the bike after drinking or taking drugs."
