PSNI Issues Safety Warning Ahead Of Busy North Coast Weekend

Police in Causeway Coast and Glens are preparing for a significant increase in visitors to the North Coast over the coming days. Superintendent Yvonne McManus has reassured the public that dedicated policing teams will be on duty to ensure safety across transport hubs, hospitality venues, residential areas, and beaches.

With large volumes of people expected in Portrush and Portstewart, authorities are warning of inevitable road congestion. Drivers are being asked to plan extra time for their journeys, utilise official car parking facilities, and remain patient. The PSNI will be working alongside Translink and local councils to direct traffic and minimise disruption.

Superintendent McManus confirmed that officers will be conducting operations to ensure vehicles are road-worthy and will have a zero-tolerance approach to reckless behaviour.

"Our officers are very much aware of car cruising and 'diffing' practices becoming more popular on our roads," she stated. "We will not tolerate unsafe driving or anti-social behaviour linked with car meets. It only takes a split second for a tragedy to occur on our narrow roads; we have sadly lost 20 people on roads across Northern Ireland this year already."

The policing focus will also extend to the night-time economy, with a particular emphasis on preventing Violence Against Women and Girls. Officers will be monitoring public spaces for anti-social behaviour and encouraging those enjoying the local nightlife to do so respectfully.

Visitors are reminded to:

Drink responsibly and be mindful of local residents.

Stay vigilant against potential drink spiking.

Utilise the 'Ask for Angela' scheme in licensed premises if they feel they are in danger.

Plan the journey home using Translink services or local taxi companies.

The Superintendent also issued a warning regarding underage drinking, noting that such activity can have long-term consequences for future career opportunities.

"Finally, please enjoy all the North Coast has to offer," Superintendent McManus concluded. "Remember that together we can encourage safer roads, safer communities, and safer socialising."
