Teenager Arrested Following Irish Cup Semi-Final Disorder
Police in south Belfast have made an arrest following scenes of disorder prior to the Irish Cup Semi-Final at the National Stadium, Windsor Park, on Friday, 3 April.
The policing operation was met with significant violence, during which fireworks, flares, and bottles were thrown. Authorities confirmed that a child was struck by a bottle during the disturbance, and at least nine police officers sustained injuries while dealing with the crowds.
South Belfast District Commander, Superintendent Finola Dornan, noted that while most fans were peaceful, a minority engaged in provocative conduct. This included an approved procession of approximately 250 people where pyrotechnics were used despite police warnings. Potential breaches of Parades Commission Determinations are now under investigation. A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of various offences, including riotous behaviour, committing a provocative act, possession of fireworks or flares at a regulated match, indecent behaviour, and attempted criminal damage. He currently remains in police custody. Additionally, two other individuals have been reported for offences involving the use of flares.
Superintendent Finola Dornan said: "The vast majority of fans were there to enjoy the match, however, there was completely unacceptable behaviour from a proportion of fans both before and after the match, at what should have been an enjoyable and safe event for all attending. Police will not tolerate disorder or criminal behaviour of any kind and, as always, we will continue to work with football clubs to address any inappropriate behaviour linked to people attending matches and ensure that the local community is kept safe. We will therefore be conducting a thorough evidence-gathering operation in the wake of last night's occurrences."
