Police Review Extensive Easter Safety Operation in North Coast
Police have concluded an extensive safety operation across the North Coast following the Easter bank holiday weekend. The initiative aimed to manage significant crowds while addressing community concerns regarding traffic disruption, anti-social behaviour, and road safety.
District Commander Superintendent Yvonne McManus confirmed that while the majority of visitors were responsible, police responded to numerous reports of dangerous driving, excessive noise, and illegal car modifications.
Over the course of the weekend, enforcement action resulted in:
• 9 arrests for offences including disorderly behaviour, driving with excess alcohol, and possession of an offensive weapon.
• 54 alcohol seizures in public spaces.
• 21 vehicles seized for being in a dangerous condition following examinations conducted alongside the DVA.
• 24 fixed penalty notices issued for vehicle defects.
• 26 Preliminary Breath Tests (PBT) carried out by officers. Road policing was a major component of the operation, with a significant number of detections related to the "Fatal Five" motoring offences. Safety Camera Vans recorded 560 detections for excess speed, while officers on the ground issued 34 endorsable and 179 non-endorsable tickets.
Superintendent McManus commented: "Speeding is one of the Fatal Five. Slow down and do not exceed the posted speed limit; drive appropriate to the road conditions; don't drink or take drugs and drive; don't be careless; always wear your seat belt and never use your mobile phone or any device that distracts you while driving."
In response to the disruption experienced by those living and working in the area, police have announced that a public meeting will be scheduled in due course. This will allow residents and business owners to raise specific concerns directly with the District Commander and partner agencies.
Superintendent McManus added: "We do recognise that some disruption was caused during this time – and we thank local residents and businesses for their patience and understanding. We will now take time to review the weekend's policing operation... to help us inform planning and implement other measures that we can potentially use for future busy holiday periods."
Police expressed gratitude to partner agencies for their assistance in maintaining public safety during one of the region's busiest periods of the year.
