Major Resurfacing Works Announced for A1 Banbridge Bypass
The Department for Infrastructure has announced a major resurfacing programme for the southbound carriageway of the A1 Banbridge Bypass, stretching between the Rathfriland Road Junction and the Newry Road (The Boulevard Outlet) Junction.
The works are scheduled to take place from 17 April to 29 April 2026, with the majority of operations conducted overnight and over weekends to minimise disruption.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins stated: "This is a substantial investment for our major road network. The A1 carries thousands of vehicles per day including many cross border travellers. These essential resurfacing works will deliver significant benefits for all road users and demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank all local residents, businesses and those who travel along the A1 for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
To ensure the safety of both road users and construction personnel, the following traffic management measures will be implemented:
• Overnight Closures (17 April): The A1 southbound will be closed from 9 pm on Friday, 17 April, until 6 am on Saturday, 18 April, between the Dromore Road Junction and Newry Road (The Boulevard Outlet) Junction. A signed diversion will be in place via the A26 and local roads.
• Continuous Weekend Closure (18–20 April): The A1 southbound will be closed continuously from 6 am on Saturday, 18 April, to 6 am on Monday, 20 April, between the Newry Road off-slip and on-slip. Traffic will be diverted via the A1 off-slip, A26 Bridgewater Roundabout, and A1 on-slip.
• Nightly Closures (20–29 April): The A1 southbound will be closed nightly from 9 pm to 6 am between the Dromore Road Junction and Newry Road (The Boulevard Outlet) Junction.
• Daytime Lane Restrictions: The A1 southbound will be reduced to a single lane daily from 6 am to 9 pm between 21 April and 28 April.
• Junction Restrictions: The A50 Old Manse Road Junction will be restricted to left turns only from 6 am on 21 April until 9 pm on 28 April.
• Slip Road Closure: The A1/B10 Rathfriland Road on-slip will be closed continuously from 9 pm on 21 April until 6 am on 29 April. Access to the park-and-ride facility and local residences will be maintained.
During the works, a temporary 40 mph speed limit will be in force, and overtaking will be prohibited.
The Department has advised that while efforts are being made to minimise inconvenience, road users should expect some delays and are encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys. All alternative routes will be clearly signposted. The completion date of 29 April is subject to favourable weather conditions; the Department will provide updates should this timeline change.
