Belfast Lough To Host 2026 GP14 World Championships
Belfast Lough will stage the GP14 World Championships from 8–14 August 2026, with more than 100 boats set to compete in a week of top‑level racing, shoreside energy and regatta spirit.
Hosted by the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club and supported by Ards and North Down Borough Council, the championship will welcome elite sailors, families and supporters from across the world to one of the UK and Ireland's most renowned sailing waters.
Entries sold out in record time, with a waiting list now in place — a sign of the GP14 class's worldwide popularity and the strong draw of Belfast Lough as a premier venue. Competitors will range in age from 14 to over 80, underlining the sport's inclusivity and lifelong appeal.
From colourful sails on the horizon to the bustle of dockside preparations, Belfast Lough and Holywood will take on the feel of a vibrant international regatta, showcasing Northern Ireland's warm hospitality, striking coastline and maritime heritage.
Lindsay Nolan, Commodore of the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club, said: "We are incredibly proud to bring the GP14 World Championships to Belfast Lough in 2026. "This event will be a true celebration of sailing - not just for our club, but for Northern Ireland as a whole. We're looking forward to welcoming competitors and visitors from around the world and giving them an unforgettable experience both on and off the water."
Beyond the on‑water action, the event is expected to deliver a notable boost for local tourism and the wider economy, with visitors exploring seaside towns, coastal walks and the region's culture and hospitality.
The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Gillian McCollum, said: "Hosting the GP14 World Championships in 2026 is a fantastic opportunity for our borough and for Northern Ireland as a whole. Belfast Lough provides a spectacular natural stage for world‑class sailing, and this event will bring significant benefits for the local economy while showcasing our coastline, tourism offering and maritime heritage to an international audience. I wish all competitors and organisers every success for what promises to be a memorable championship"
With a packed programme of racing, social events and onshore celebrations planned, the GP14 Worlds will be more than a sporting fixture — it will be a moment for Northern Ireland to shine on the global stage.
