Economy Minister Convenes Inaugural Meeting of AI Advisory Panel

Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has chaired the first session of the newly formed Artificial Intelligence (AI) Advisory Panel, a group designed to help determine the future of the technology within Northern Ireland.

The panel consists of specialists from government, industry, and academia, aiming to create a unified strategy for managing the economic impacts of AI. The group's immediate priority is to assist in implementing recommendations from the Matrix report, titled AI and the Future of Work in Northern Ireland.

The establishment of the panel is a key component of the Department for the Economy's AI Strategic Direction. This framework is intended to guide policy and interventions to ensure the region can capitalise on technological advancements while addressing concerns regarding ethical governance, infrastructure, and skills.

Minister Archibald said: "AI has the potential to transform our economy by helping to address long‑standing productivity challenges, create high‑value jobs and drive innovation across all sectors. I am also acutely aware of the challenges it presents, particularly in relation to skills, ethical governance and the need for appropriate infrastructure.

"By convening this Advisory Panel, we are ensuring we are well placed to seize the opportunities of AI in a responsible and inclusive way."

The Minister highlighted Northern Ireland's existing strengths in data analytics, cyber security, and software, as well as the role of the Artificial Intelligence Collaboration Centre in helping local businesses adopt new technologies.

The Minister added: "We have a strong base to realise the potential of AI, with established strengths in software, cyber, data and analytics, world‑class universities and colleges, and assets such as the Artificial Intelligence Collaboration Centre, which is already supporting businesses to understand and adopt AI.

"The Advisory Panel and the expertise it brings will be a vital asset as we build on these strengths while navigating a rapidly evolving technological landscape."

Prior to the inaugural meeting, Dr Archibald met with students at Belfast Met who are participating in an EY Assured Skills Academy focused on AI and Data. These academies offer pre-employment training to help individuals secure industry-recognised accreditations and prepare for guaranteed vacancies in high-priority sectors.
