Woman Wanted In Hungary Arrested In Carrickfergus

Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's International Policing Unit have arrested a 42-year-old woman in the Carrickfergus area today, Monday 20th April.

The woman is wanted by authorities in Hungary to stand trial for offences related to money laundering and fraud. The alleged crimes took place in Hungary in 2024. She was detained on the strength of a Hungarian extradition warrant and is expected to appear before Laganside Extradition Court this afternoon.

The arrest follows a coordinated European investigation into the activities of an organised crime group linked to theft and fraud offences. The PSNI worked in close partnership with Hungarian investigators and the UK's Joint International Crime Centre to facilitate the detention.

Sergeant Davey from the International Policing Unit said: "Today's arrest was as a result of an ongoing investigation across Europe into an organised crime group involved in fraud and theft offences. In this case we have worked closely with investigators in Hungary and colleagues in the UK's Joint International Crime Centre."

He added that the message remains clear that Northern Ireland is not a safe haven for individuals attempting to evade arrest. He stated that the PSNI will continue to work with law enforcement partners to ensure wanted persons are brought before the courts to face the consequences of their actions.
