Alliance MLA Condemns Deliberate Fire at Former Ballycastle Hotel
Alliance North Antrim MLA Sian Mulholland has hit out at those responsible for a fire at the vacant Antrim Arms hotel in Ballycastle, following confirmation from authorities that the blaze was intentional.
The MLA stated that the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with long-term derelict sites and the subsequent risks posed to local residents.
"News that this devastating fire was started deliberately is deeply concerning. This was a significant incident in the heart of Ballycastle, and residents will be shocked and angered that such reckless behaviour has put lives, homes and local heritage at risk," Ms Mulholland said. She also praised the efforts of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, adding: "I want to pay tribute to the firefighters who worked through the night to bring the blaze under control and protect surrounding properties."
The North Antrim representative noted that while the specific cause of this fire was arson, it points to a broader problem regarding neglected infrastructure becoming hubs for antisocial activity.
She highlighted that Alliance Minister Andrew Muir is currently moving forward with the Dilapidation Bill to tackle such issues. The proposed legislation intends to grant local councils the power to issue enforcement notices, ensuring owners and occupiers are held accountable for maintaining their properties.
Regarding the local impact of the fire, Ms Mulholland noted the disruption caused by the necessary road closures on a primary route into the town.
"This is a key route into the town, and its closure has had a real impact on local businesses and on how Ballycastle functions day to day. People want to see it made safe and the road reopened as soon as possible."
