PSNI Issues Safety Appeal Ahead of North West 200
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the organisers of the Briggs Equipment North West 200 have issued a coordinated safety appeal as race week approaches. Scheduled to take place from 4 to 9 May, the event is expected to attract thousands of international visitors to the "Triangle" route between Portstewart, Coleraine, and Portrush.
Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts emphasised that significant planning has been undertaken alongside partner agencies to ensure the safety of both participants and the public. Under Operation Lifesaver, road policing operations will specifically target speeding, careless driving, and vehicles that fail to meet construction and use regulations. Chief Superintendent Roberts stated: "If you are riding up to join us, please remember it's not a race to get here and that road conditions at this time of the year can change very quickly. If you are driving, please take time to 'Think Bike' - particularly when emerging from junctions and areas where it may be harder to see oncoming traffic. During the scheduled race days, please follow the directions of the event marshals at all times. Do not put yourself, other spectators or participating riders at risk by taking chances by entering the circuit on foot or by vehicle before it is reopened at the direction of the Clerk of the Course."
The PSNI Safe Transport Team will also be working with Translink to monitor the public transport network, aiming to reduce anti-social behaviour. Furthermore, officers will maintain a focus on preventing Violence Against Women and Girls during the social events accompanying the race week.
Spectators and travellers are reminded that local journeys will take longer than usual and are asked to be respectful of the residents and businesses within the vibrant coastal community.
North West 200 Race Director Mervyn Whyte added his support to the police advice, stressing the importance of patience on the busy routes.
Mervyn Whyte said: "The North West 200 brings tens of thousands of people to the north coast each May and we want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable visit to the races. Please leave the racing to the racers and follow the advice of the police. Have patience on the busy roads and show respect for your fellow travellers and pedestrians."
