Investigation Launched Following West Belfast Disorder

The PSNI is appealing for witnesses following an outbreak of disorder in the Stewartstown Road area of west Belfast on the evening of Monday, 4th May.

Chief Inspector George confirmed that police responded to several reports of large crowds and vehicles congregating in the areas of Blacks Road, Bell Steele Road, and Dairy Farm. It was reported that vehicles were being driven in a dangerous manner in the vicinity.

Upon arrival, officers were targeted by youths who threw bottles and masonry at them. During the confrontation, two police officers were struck and multiple service vehicles sustained damage.

Chief Inspector George commented: "I would appeal to those people involved in this kind of reckless behaviour on our roads to think about the possible serious consequence of their actions. Not only does this kind of activity impact on the lives of local residents, but it can present a significant danger to other road users. I would also urge those involved to be aware that police will use all powers available to them to ensure the safety of road users, including the power to seize vehicles."

The Chief Inspector added that the police have been collaborating with partner organisations and local politicians to find a safe and lasting solution to these issues.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway, supported by an evidence-gathering operation intended to identify those responsible for the disorder.
