Multi-Million Pound AI Investment to Transform NI Classrooms

Education Minister Paul Givan has confirmed the launch of system-aware generative AI tools for schools across Northern Ireland, backed by a £10.7 million investment. The initiative aims to provide GenAI licences to every member of the teaching staff in the region, complemented by comprehensive training and guidance to ensure the technology is used safely and effectively.

The project is specifically intended to alleviate teacher workload by automating unnecessary administrative duties, thereby improving efficiency and staff wellbeing while encouraging innovative approaches to classroom learning.

Regarding the rollout, Paul Givan stated: "This is an exciting and significant step forward for education in Northern Ireland, and a clear investment in our teaching profession. The Independent Review of Teacher Workload highlighted the potentially transformative role of generative AI, and I am prioritising this funding to give teachers practical tools that reduce time spent on administrative tasks, support planning and enhance teaching."

To ensure a secure digital environment, all GenAI licences are to be distributed via the EdIS managed education technology service.

The Minister added: "We know that many teachers are already using publicly available GenAI tools. My priority is ensuring that use is safe, effective, and properly supported. Alongside access to licences, my department will provide guidance for schools on the safe and effective use of AI. Furthermore, every teacher will receive professional learning to build their knowledge, confidence and skills"

In addition to the software and training, an online learning platform will be established. This resource is designed to provide easy access to materials while fostering a collaborative environment where schools can share their experiences and insights.

The Minister concluded: "This programme represents a significant and practical investment in teachers and in the sustainability of the profession. By giving teachers trusted tools, high‑quality training and clear guidance, we are reducing workload pressures and supporting a modern, professional education system where teachers are empowered to focus on teaching and learning."
