Communities Minister Highlights Impact of Grassroots Sport During Donaghadee Visit

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has visited several sports clubs in Donaghadee to observe the significant role community-led athletics play in promoting health, social inclusion, and general wellbeing.

During his visit, the Minister engaged with coaches, players, and volunteers from the Seaside Sharkies at Donaghadee Rugby Football Club, Ards and Donaghadee Cricket Club, and Donaghadee Football Club. He used the opportunity to highlight how these local hubs are essential in encouraging residents to lead more active and connected lives.

Minister Lyons stated: "It has been a pleasure to visit these clubs in Donaghadee and meet the volunteers and participants who give so much of their time to ensure that sport is open and accessible to everyone. Clubs like these are at the heart of their communities and play a key role in helping people stay active, improve their health and build confidence and friendships."

A particular focus of the visit was the Ards and Donaghadee Cricket Club, which recently merged to safeguard the sport's future in the area. The club now supports various senior teams alongside a thriving junior section. The Minister met with officials at Northfield to discuss how targeted financial support can enhance a club's ability to attract new members.

The cricket club recently benefited from over £4,000 in funding via the Department for Communities' Olympic Legacy Fund, a programme delivered by Sport NI. This investment is being used to acquire new equipment, including a bowling machine with balls, a mobile cricket cage, and a ball-stopping net system.

Commenting on the financial support, Minister Lyons said: "It is extremely positive to see directly how funding is making a difference. Investment through programmes such as my Olympic Legacy Fund supports clubs to grow, improve their facilities and provide better experiences for players and the wider community. Seeing the benefits first-hand reinforces just how important this support is."

The Minister also stopped at Donaghadee Football Club to discuss the necessity of modern facilities for grassroots development and youth participation. He concluded the tour by acknowledging the efforts of those who run the organisations, noting that supporting their work remains a key priority through the Active Living Strategy.

"None of this would be possible without the commitment of volunteers," the Minister added. "Their hard work ensures that people of all ages can enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of sport. Supporting that work remains a priority through the delivery of our Active Living Strategy."
