NatWest Group Pledges No New Ulster Bank Branch Closures Until 2029

NatWest Group, the parent company of Ulster Bank, has announced a commitment to make no further branch closure announcements across its Ulster Bank, NatWest, and Royal Bank of Scotland brands until at least 2029. The decision marks the conclusion of the group's current programme of network modifications and signals the start of a new, long-term investment strategy in its physical branch footprint to support face-to-face banking.

As part of a broader vision to support local growth and deliver assistance where it is required most, the financial institution plans to refurbish, relocate, and investigate opportunities to open new branches in areas with clear customer demand.

Although 95% of its clientele currently opt for digital channels to manage their day-to-day banking needs, the group acknowledges that in-person support continues to be a vital element of financial management, particularly during significant life events.

In Northern Ireland, Ulster Bank's current operations include the following:

• Serves over half a million retail customers, representing one in three individuals and families in Northern Ireland.

• Manages the largest branch network in Northern Ireland, comprising 25 branches.

• Functions as the only bank in the region to operate a mobile branch network, which serves 48 local communities.

• Supports more than 35,000 businesses across the country.

• Hosts the Belfast Accelerator Hub in Donegall Square, which has assisted over 1,000 entrepreneurs in raising more than £40 million in investment and creating nearly 600 jobs.

Solange Chamberlain, CEO, Retail Banking, NatWest Group said: "This is an important moment for our customers and the communities we serve. We are investing to offer customers a seamless mix of ways to bank with us, including over the phone, digitally, or via our free to use ATM network — while continuing to support those who prefer face-to-face banking in branches and community banking hubs.

"We will not announce any further branch closures until at least 2029 and are expanding more flexible and accessible ways to bank, with enhanced support to help customers act with confidence and achieve their financial goals."
