Public Advised to Expect Delays Ahead of Armed Forces Day in Coleraine
Police are alerting road users and members of the public to prepare for traffic delays and significant crowds in Coleraine on Saturday 20th June, as the town hosts Armed Forces Day 2026.
Organised by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, the family-orientated event is predicted to attract around 25,000 visitors. Coleraine last hosted the celebration back in 2018.
The day's programme features a military village, live demonstrations, a gun salute, a flag abseil, and an aerial flypast featuring the RAF Falcons parachute display and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota.
Activities are scheduled to start at 10am on Saturday 20th June, with a designated quiet hour beginning at 10.15am. However, local disruption is expected to start on Friday evening. Both Christie Park and Coleraine Leisure Centre will be closed to the public from 6pm on Friday 19th June until the conclusion of the event at roughly 6pm on Saturday.
Two parades are scheduled to take place during the day: • The first parade departs Coleraine Leisure Centre at 10.45am, travelling via Railway Road, Mill Street, Long Commons, Kingsgate Street, Church Street, and the Diamond.
• The second parade starts at 11.30am, following the identical route before continuing along Queen Street, Circular Road, Coleraine Old Bridge, Strand Road, and Christie Park.
From 7am onwards, Strand Road will be reduced to a single lane, and restricted airspace will be active between 6am and 8pm.
With traffic disruption anticipated throughout Coleraine town centre, attendees are strongly encouraged to arrive early and secure parking legally and in good time. Park and ride options will operate from Rugby Avenue, alongside park and walk sites at the Vineyard, the Crescent, and Northern Regional College (NRC). Accessible parking and a dedicated shuttle bus will run from the Market Yard, though this must be pre-booked.
Signposted diversions will be operational, and traffic management systems will be deployed to help guide drivers and maintain access for local residents. Those who do not intend to visit the event are advised to seek alternative routes to bypass the expected delays.
