Executive Condemns Violence And Issues Appeal For Calm
The Northern Ireland Executive has released a collective statement firmly condemning the violence, public disorder, and intimidation that took place across local communities last night.
Ministers highlighted that the unrest has caused substantial harm, compromised innocent lives, and spread fear, stressing that such actions provide no benefit to any community.
Reflecting on an incident in north Belfast on Monday, the Executive described it as deeply shocking. While acknowledging the intense public sentiment surrounding the event, Ministers noted that the matter is now subject to legal proceedings and insisted that the justice system must be permitted to take its course.
The statement drew a clear line between the right to peaceful protest and the destructive behaviour witnessed last night. Ministers stated that certain individuals are deliberately exploiting genuine public hurt, concern, and anger for their own misguided purposes, ultimately causing destruction within the very areas they claim to defend. The Executive firmly rejected all forms of prejudice, stating that racism, intimidation, and violence are fundamentally wrong. They added that there is absolutely no justification for attacking residential homes, setting fire to family vehicles, targeting local businesses, or damaging public infrastructure such as roads and transport systems.
With international attention focused on Northern Ireland this week, the Executive emphasised that the actions of individuals and society will dictate how the region is perceived and how communities progress.
Expressing solidarity with those directly impacted by the recent unrest, Ministers also praised the bravery, professionalism, and commitment of the police and emergency services who worked to protect the public. The statement explicitly valued the role of minority ethnic communities, highlighting their vital contributions to the economy, health sector, and public services.
Concluding the joint statement, the Executive reaffirmed its shared commitment to establishing a safe, prosperous, and welcoming environment for everyone in Northern Ireland, while appealing for calm and urging the public to reject division and uphold the rule of law.
