Redundant water infrastructure from NI Water has been successfully integrated into a major ecological restoration initiative on Rathlin Island.

The decommissioned pipes were gifted to the island's LIFE Raft project, where conservation teams have modified them for use as rat bait stations. This initiative forms part of a wider strategy to eradicate invasive predators from the location, allowing native ground-nesting seabird populations to safely recover.

Situated off the north coast of County Antrim, Rathlin Island holds international recognition for its diverse wildlife and hosts one of the largest breeding seabird colonies across the UK and Ireland. The island provides sanctuary to numerous species, including kittiwakes, puffins, guillemots, and razorbills. The contribution of these surplus pipes from NI Water has allowed environmentalists to progress the preservation campaign via sustainable and resource-efficient means. Roy Taylor, NI Water catchment manager, stated that the utility provider was delighted to assist with the RSPB's environmental efforts. "By donating surplus watermain pipes, we were able to contribute to a successful project that helped protect Northern Ireland's unique biodiversity while also promoting the sustainable reuse of resources," he said.

The £4.5m project spans five years and is jointly managed by RSPB NI alongside the Rathlin Development and Community Association. Financial and strategic backing is provided by DAERA, EU LIFE, the Garfield Weston Foundation, and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
