Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has welcomed the official start of construction on the Strabane Town Centre Public Realm Scheme. The substantial regeneration initiative is designed to transform and elevate prominent streets and public spaces throughout the town.

The £7 million development aims to boost the overall quality, accessibility, and visual appeal of the town centre, establishing a more inviting environment for local residents, shoppers, businesses, and tourists alike.

The extensive programme of works includes the upgrading of footpaths and carriageways, installation of new street lighting and street furniture, introduction of tree planting, and new public artwork. Traffic flow will be enhanced through targeted junction improvements, while long-term regeneration goals will be backed by a new public space at Abercorn Square alongside modifications to on-street parking and service areas. Minister Lyons said: "I am pleased to see work begin on this important project for Strabane. My Department's investment of over £6million will help revitalise the town centre by creating a more attractive, accessible and welcoming environment for everyone who lives, works and spends time there.

"This scheme will strengthen the town centre's appeal, support local businesses and help attract further investment. It is also an important precursor to the planned £115million City Deal investment in Strabane, which will support the wider regeneration of the town centre."

The project is being delivered by Derry City and Strabane District Council. The physical upgrades will focus heavily on improving Railway Street, Derry Road, Castle Street, Abercorn Square, Market Street, and Upper Main Street.
