Alliance and Sinn Féin Pay Tribute to Survivors Following Donaldson Verdict

Alliance and Sinn Féin have both paid tribute to the survivors at the centre of the trial involving former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson, following the jury's verdict.

In separate statements issued on Monday, both parties said their thoughts were with those who had come forward and praised their courage throughout the legal process.

Alliance deputy leader Eóin Tennyson said his thoughts were "first and foremost" with the two survivors involved in the case and described their decision to come forward as an act of significant courage.

He said the verdict demonstrated that "no one is above the law", regardless of their position or public profile, and expressed hope that the outcome would give confidence to others who have experienced abuse that they will be believed, supported and able to seek justice through the courts.

Separately, Sinn Féin MP John Finucane said his thoughts were with the victims and their loved ones, adding that their "courage and dignity" had ensured justice was achieved.

He said the case served as a reminder that nobody is beyond the reach of the law and expressed hope that the conclusion of the trial would encourage other victims and survivors of abuse to come forward and seek support.

Donaldson resigned as DUP leader in March 2024 after being charged with a number of historic sexual offences and was subsequently suspended from the party. He was later convicted following a trial at Newry Crown Court.
