Westminster Urged To Act To Safeguard NI’s Air Links

Northern Ireland risks slipping behind rival regions and losing crucial air links unless decisive steps are taken, Belfast City Airport has warned.

Addressing a Westminster reception of MPs, peers and industry figures, Chief Executive Matthew Hall cautioned against complacency amid rising demand and fiercer competition.

"With passenger numbers to and from the island of Ireland expected to double by 2040, we are entering a period of significant change," he said.

"This presents a major opportunity — but it also means stronger competition for routes, aircraft and investment. Without the right conditions and a clear, sustainable plan for growth, there is a real risk that Northern Ireland does not capture its share."

Belfast City Airport is a key hub linking Northern Ireland with the rest of the UK, with more than 90 per cent of passengers on domestic services. Connections to major destinations including London and Manchester underpin business, tourism and family travel, highlighting the need for reliable, resilient air services.

Matthew added: "Northern Ireland is well placed to benefit from growing demand for air travel, but it is important that we maintain a supportive and competitive environment as airlines make decisions about where to base aircraft and invest in new routes.

"With the right approach, there is a real opportunity to strengthen our position and deliver even greater connectivity for passengers and businesses."

The intervention comes as the airport advances its Master Plan 2040 — a long-term, responsible growth strategy shaped by extensive consultation and endorsed by a broad range of stakeholders.

To meet rising demand while enhancing connectivity and driving economic growth, the vision includes unlocking up to £200 million in private investment.

Planned works feature an expanded terminal, additional aircraft stands, aprons and taxiway capacity, improved surface access, and scope for complementary on-site development such as a hotel and EV charging forecourt.

According to the airport, the plans could contribute £1.7 billion a year to the Northern Ireland economy, support more than 23,000 jobs across the region and further strengthen Northern Ireland's appeal as a place to live, visit and work.

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Hilary Benn, said: "Belfast City Airport is a vital gateway that sits at the very heart of Northern Ireland's economy.

"The UK Government is working with the Northern Ireland Executive to position Northern Ireland as one of the best places in the world to do business.

"Connectivity, and Belfast City Airport's ambitious plans for the future, are key to supporting regional growth, competitiveness, and long-term prosperity."

Sponsored by East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson, the Westminster event gathered political and business leaders from across the UK and Ireland, underscoring aviation's role in regional growth and connectivity.

It follows the publication of the draft Master Plan 2040 at Stormont Parliament Buildings in September 2025, which was welcomed by First Minister Michelle O'Neill and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly.

Matthew concluded: "We now have a real opportunity to secure Northern Ireland's place in an increasingly competitive market. We are ready to invest, ready to grow and ready to deliver — and with the right support, we can ensure connectivity not only keeps pace but helps drives our economy forward."
