Jacqui Durkin Appointed New Police Ombudsman For NI
Jacqui Durkin has been appointed as the new Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, becoming the fifth person to hold the position.
The appointment was announced on Wednesday by First Minister Michelle O’Neill and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly.
Durkin takes over the role following the retirement of Marie Anderson in December 2025 and will now lead the Office of the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland during her term in office.
The appointment was welcomed by Hugh Hume, Chief Executive of the Police Ombudsman's Office. "The appointment of a new Police Ombudsman to lead the Office is welcome news and together with all the staff, I look forward to working with Jacqui and to supporting her to achieve her vision and priorities throughout her term."
Durkin's appointment comes as the office continues its work overseeing police complaints and maintaining public confidence in policing accountability across Northern Ireland.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Marie Anderson has taken up her new role as Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland. The former Public Services Ombudsman succeeds Dr Michael Maguire and is the fourth person to hold the position. Her new office, with a staff of around 150 people and budget of over £9 million, is responsible for investigating complaints against the police.

Sir Ronnie Flanagan appointed Inspector of Constabulary
Sir Ronnie Flanagan will vacate the Chief Constable's hot seat in favour of taking up a new post with Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary. As Inspector of Constabulary, Sir Ronnie will now inspect a number of UK police forces including its largest – the Metropolitan Police.
