Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, working with the Causeway Association of Urban Sports (CAUS), will commence a masterplan study in August to determine the optimal approach for delivering the Metropole Project in Portrush.

The scheme aims to provide a high-quality, inclusive, free-to-use outdoor urban sports and community facility that promotes active lifestyles, enhances the public realm, strengthens community cohesion, improves youth recreation, and reinforces Portrush's status as a key tourism and leisure destination on the North Coast.

Local campaigners have sought a dedicated skatepark and urban sports facility for more than 30 years, with previous plans advancing but ultimately not being realised. This new commission signals a renewed, practical and deliverable pathway to an inclusive, sustainable and high-standard venue. An integrated masterplanning approach will bring together urban sports, landscape, play, recreation and community infrastructure into a single, coherent public space.

Concept proposals are expected to feature a purpose-designed plaza for a range of wheeled sports and abilities; a multi-sport pump track and off-road BMX facility; a flexible civic/community area; and dedicated play provision.

Over the coming months, the Council and CAUS will collaborate with Betongpark to consult residents, stakeholders, local schools, community groups and nearby businesses, ensuring user needs and preferences inform the design and unlock the full potential of the Metropole site.

Betongpark is recognised as one of Europe's leading skatepark design firms, with extensive experience co-designing and constructing urban sports spaces that integrate effectively with wider recreational areas and the public realm.

Consultation activities are planned for August and September, with further details to be announced. On completion of the study, proposals will be presented to the Council and CAUS to inform decisions on next steps.
