NI Water is to invest £2.5 million in upgrading Cabragh Wastewater Treatment Works in County Tyrone, boosting capacity to meet environmental standards, support planned growth and better protect the River Blackwater while the site continues to operate.

The upgrade will enhance the treatment capability of the existing works, ensuring it can accommodate projected increases in wastewater from Cabragh and surrounding areas while remaining compliant with Northern Ireland Environment Agency requirements.

As part of the scheme, an additional wastewater treatment process and associated infrastructure will be installed. This will improve how future flows are managed and strengthen the resilience of local wastewater services. NI Water's Senior Project Manager Michael Donnelly said: "This £2.5 million investment demonstrates NI Water's commitment to providing modern, resilient wastewater infrastructure that meets the needs of local communities both now and in the future. The upgrade at Cabragh will support the ongoing development in the area while helping to protect the local environment and improve the local river water quality.

"The existing treatment works will operate as normal as the upgrade takes place, ensuring reduced disruption to our customers. There may be increased traffic in the area and we thank the local community for their patience and cooperation as the work progresses."

The project team has asked the public to keep children away from construction areas and machinery, and to observe all safety signage. Access to working zones is prohibited for public safety.

DLJ Water is delivering the scheme, working with Deane Public Works and Avove Ireland. Tetra Tech also forms part of the project team.

The initiative is part of NI Water's wider programme of investment in wastewater infrastructure across Northern Ireland, delivering environmental benefits and supporting future economic and community development.
