The first residents have begun moving into Arbour Housing’s John Street development in L'Derry, which provides 40 high-quality social apartments for people aged 55 and over.

The £7.5 million project comprises 24 two-bedroom and 16 one-bedroom homes, designed to support independent living. The apartments are modern, accessible and close to services, amenities and public transport, helping residents stay active and connected in their community.

Funded with a £4.7 million grant from the Department for Communities via the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, the scheme occupies a prominent city-centre site between John Street and Foyle Road.

The new homes add to the supply of much-needed social housing in an area of significant demand. The latest figures indicate more than 5,000 households are experiencing housing stress across the Derry City and Strabane District, underlining the ongoing requirement for affordable, secure accommodation. Delivered with contractor Brendan Loughran & Sons and McGirr Architects, the apartments meet Lifetime Homes and Secure by Design standards to ensure accessibility, safety and adaptability. Energy-efficient features have been included to help lower bills and support sustainable living.

Tomas O Maonaigh, among the first to receive keys, is a lifelong city resident who had spent a lengthy period in temporary accommodation before being allocated a flat.

"After a long time on the waiting list I couldn't believe it when I was told I'd been allocated such a wonderful place to call my home. My flat is really well fitted out, is bright and spacious, and the views over the Foyle are incredible. I’m still in disbelief and look forward to enjoying this space and welcoming guests, including my six grandchildren, over the years ahead."
