Achieving the region's renewable energy and net zero ambitions will require a whole-system and whole-society effort, driven by collaboration, innovation and shared commitment across government, industry, regulators, communities and the public.

SONI, Northern Ireland's electricity Transmission System Operator, has published its Stakeholder Engagement Strategy 2027–2032, outlining how it will partner with stakeholders to help deliver a decarbonised, resilient and cost-effective electricity system for consumers and businesses.

The strategy supports SONI's Corporate Strategy 2025–2031, 'Meeting Northern Ireland's energy needs, today and in the future', which sets out the organisation's expanded role in transforming the power system while maintaining safe, secure and reliable operations. Embedding engagement in planning and delivery is central to achieving these goals.

Building on its previous approach and informed by extensive stakeholder feedback, the new five-year plan strengthens how SONI involves people and organisations in its work.

Its framework focuses on early and purposeful planning; transparency about where stakeholders can influence outcomes; and engagement that is proportionate and tailored to different needs. SONI will also show how input shapes its thinking and decisions, while continually improving how it engages. The operator recognises it must balance diverse, and sometimes competing, priorities. While not every request can be met, SONI has reaffirmed its commitment to listen carefully, engage openly and clearly explain how decisions are taken in the wider public interest.

The Stakeholder Engagement Strategy 2027–2032 sets out the principles, approach and delivery framework that will guide SONI's engagement over the next five years, supporting its role in meeting Northern Ireland's energy needs today and in the future.
