PSNI Witness Appeals Service Already Yielding Vital Leads Since June Launch
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said its Witness Appeals Service, which went live on 24 June, lets people upload information and footage via the PSNI website without waiting on the 101 non-emergency line. The tool sits alongside the existing online non-emergency reporting form and is intended for use in response to specific investigative appeals.
Officers say material submitted through the service can assist ongoing cases and, in some instances, provide crucial evidence.
Chief Inspector Peter Haughey said: "We're really pleased that many members of the public have been using the Witness Appeals Service since its launch back in June and the feedback so far has been very positive.
"As we go forward, the service will no doubt be refined further, as we evaluate its effectiveness and how it may be improved, based on operational benefit, service demand and other variables. However, it's been a great addition to our online reporting so far and we would really encourage people to use it if they think they have any information which could assist with our appeals.
"Self-reporting is incredibly useful as it gives the public instant access to an online tool which not only has the potential to alert police to ongoing crime, but will also hopefully aid our investigations by providing important evidence and details from eye-witnesses."
Since launch, information submitted through the portal has supported inquiries including a murder investigation and road traffic-related offences. In one case, a member of the public reported having ring-doorbell footage that may help detectives map the movements of individuals connected to a murder inquiry and build an evidential timeline.
Investigators have also received footage and witness accounts relating to a fatal road traffic collision, including CCTV apparently showing a vehicle travelling at high speed shortly beforehand. In addition, material linked to a dangerous driving case and a motorcycle investigation — alongside reported sightings and potentially relevant property information — has been shared following an appeal about high-speed motorcycles in the Banbridge/Lurgan area.
Police say these examples underline the early operational benefits and potential evidential value of the service.
