PHA Urges Simple Steps To Prevent Falls And Stay Independent
The Public Health Agency (PHA) is calling on the public to make straightforward changes to daily routines, stay active and create safer home environments to reduce the likelihood of a fall during Falls Prevention Week 2026.
While anyone can experience a fall, the risk rises with age. Falls can harm physical health, undermine confidence and threaten independent living. However, many incidents are preventable through modest adjustments, regular check-ups and targeted exercise.
Diane McIntyre, Strategic Lead for Ageing Well (Health and Social Wellbeing Improvement), said: "Falls are not an inevitable part of ageing. While the risk of falling can increase as we get older, there are many practical steps people can take to reduce their risk and continue living active, independent lives.
"Staying physically active, attending regular health checks, reviewing medications and making simple changes around the home can all help reduce the risk of falling.
"Falls prevention is everyone's business. Families, carers, healthcare professionals and communities all have an important role to play in supporting safer mobility and helping people remain active, connected and independent for longer."
Practical Ways To Help Prevent Falls
• Keep Moving To Build Strength And Balance
- Being active most days boosts strength, balance, coordination and confidence.
- Walking, strength work and balance exercises can all reduce fall risk.
- Aim for regular activity across the week.
• Check Medications Regularly
- Some prescribed and over-the-counter medicines, and alcohol, can affect balance, coordination and reaction time. - Ask your GP or pharmacist for medication reviews, especially if you notice dizziness, drowsiness or unsteadiness.
• Look After Eyesight And Hearing
- Routine sight and hearing tests can identify issues that may affect balance and mobility.
- Keep prescriptions up to date and use glasses or hearing aids as advised.
• Make The Home Safer
- Keep walkways free from clutter and trailing cables.
- Remove or secure loose rugs and mats.
- Ensure stairs, halls and entrances are well lit.
- Mop up spills straight away.
- Consider fitting handrails or grab rails where needed.
• Wear Supportive Footwear
- Choose well-fitting shoes with good grip and support.
- Avoid loose slippers or footwear that could lead to trips and falls.
• Support Bone Health
- A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D supports strong bones.
- Speak to your GP if you have concerns about osteoporosis or bone health.
• Know The Warning Signs
- Be alert to changes that can heighten fall risk, such as:
- Feeling unsteady on your feet
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- Changes to vision or hearing
- Muscle weakness
- Recent trips, slips or near misses
Diane concluded: "If you have experienced a fall, or are concerned about your balance or mobility, speak to a healthcare professional for advice and support.
"Falls Prevention Week aims to help people understand their falls risk or that of a loved one, recognise early warning signs, learn strength and balance techniques, know what to do following a fall and access reliable information and support.
"Together we can help people stay active, connected and independent for longer."
