Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed that works on an active travel project covering Durham Street and College Square North will begin on 28 September 2026. The investment forms part of the Belfast Cycling Network.

The project will upgrade existing cycling facilities to provide a two-way protected cycle lane, connecting the active travel measures completed through the Grand Central Station project to the northern side of Belfast city centre at College Street.

Minister Kimmins said: "This Belfast Cycling Network scheme further demonstrates my commitment to creating safer, more attractive infrastructure for people who choose to walk, wheel or cycle for many of their shorter everyday journeys. "I would like to thank the public and residents in advance for their cooperation and ask that they comply with all temporary traffic restrictions while these works are being completed."

To ensure safety and support efficient delivery, a temporary one-way closure will be in place for northbound traffic on Durham Street and College Square North for the duration of the works. A signed diversion for motorists will operate via Grosvenor Road and College Square East.

The Department has programmed the works and traffic management to minimise inconvenience, but road users are asked to comply with all temporary signage and allow additional time when travelling through the area.

It is anticipated that all work will be completed by early March. The Department will keep the public updated on any changes.
