Held on Saturday 26 September, the complex was turned into a giant birthday party with a packed programme of entertainment running throughout the day.

Visitors enjoyed circus performances featuring a magician, clowns and a juggler, while the rink hosted exhibitions by some of the region's leading talent. Former Olympic skater and Ice Bowl coach Kevin van der Perren took part, as did students choreographed by Dancing on Ice star and Ice Bowl coach Maria Filippov, alongside other local performers. Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Brian Higginson, said: "Dundonald International Ice Bowl has been an iconic tourist attraction since 1986 and remains Northern Ireland's only public Olympic-sized ice rink. This 40th birthday celebration not only marked four decades of the facility, but celebrated the generations of families, friends, schools, clubs and communities who have made it part of their lives. The atmosphere was fantastic, with people of all ages enjoying activities, sharing memories and celebrating the occasion."

Chair of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee, Councillor Sharon Lowry, commented: "There was a sense of excitement and energy in the air for the 40th birthday celebrations. Families spent the day enjoying face painting, balloon modelling, Circus performers, Spin the Wheel competitions, prize giveaways and lots of DJ led entertainment.

"We heard so many wonderful stories from visitors including memories of their first skates and birthday parties to bowling nights, school trips and family days out. We want to thank every visitor, customer, club, school, coach, staff member and partner who has played a part in our story and look forward to our next chapter."
