MPs And Peers Urged To Put Victims At The Centre Of Troubles Bill Debate
The Commission for Victims and Survivors has urged that the voices, needs and experiences of all victims and survivors remain central while Parliament scrutinises the newest amendments to the Troubles Bill.
It stressed that behind every discussion on legacy legislation are people whose lives were fundamentally altered by the Troubles/conflict.
Families continue to live with bereavement and loss, while many victims and survivors endure the lasting effects of physical injury and psychological trauma. For numerous families, unanswered questions persist, and the consequences of the past are still felt by children and grandchildren.
As attention shifts to the detail of the latest changes to the Troubles Bill, the Commission is calling for a focus beyond technical provisions to what these decisions will mean for victims and survivors, their families and future generations. For those directly affected, this is more than a parliamentary exchange; it concerns their lives, experiences, needs and future.
The Commission warned that the choices made in Parliament will have long-term consequences and said the perspectives of victims and survivors must be at the core of those decisions.
As part of its ongoing engagement on the Bill, the Commission has released We’re Still Here, a video that brings together the voices and experiences of victims and survivors from a range of backgrounds.
The film underscores the continuing impact of the Troubles/conflict and highlights why recognition, acknowledgement, access to information and appropriate support remain essential.
The Commission has shared the video with MPs and peers ahead of parliamentary consideration of the Bill, encouraging them to hear directly from those whose lives continue to be shaped by the past.
It is urging viewers to watch We’re Still Here to understand why the decisions taken now matter today and for generations to come.
