Joint funeral held for infant drowning victims

A joint funeral has taken place for the two boys who drowned in a disused swimming in Co Down on Friday.

Two-year-old David Smith and four-year-old Shea Laverty are believed to have squeezed through a gap in a fence of a neighbour's garden to get to the outdoor pool where they later drowned.

The children were discovered by David’s father at around 5pm at the property in Ardaveen Drive, off the Dublin Road in Newry.

Newry PSNI Inspector Ronnie Neill, who attended the scene of the incident, said: "Mr Smith removed the children from the water and attempted to resuscitate them both. Emergency services were called to the scene and the children were conveyed to Daisy Hill Hospital where they died a short time later.”

Hundred’s of mourners attended today’s funeral with Mass said at the Sacred Heart Church, at Cloughoge in Newry.

David was buried in the adjoining cemetery, while Shea will be buried in a family plot in Coalisland, Co Tyrone.
