Double death tragedy in Halloween shooting

A 47-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman have died in a shooting incident in east Belfast in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A 15-year-old girl, the daughter of the woman killed in the shooting, has undergone emergency surgery for two gunshot wounds. Her condition is described as "comfortable".

The incident occurred at a house at Hills Avenue shortly before 1.30am on the morning of Sunday October 31.

The dead man, Brian Smith, 47, a former prison officer at Magilligan jail apparently shot Sandra Crilly, 40, and her teenage daughter from a previous marriage, before turning the legally held gun on himself.

Mrs Crilly's 20-year-old son was reported to have been in the house at the time, but was not injured in the incident.

Detectives, while they are keeping an open mind as to a motive for the killing, are treating the shooting as a domestic incident.
