TSS steps up checks on pub and restaurant prices

Trading Standards Service (TSS) has launched a pre-Christmas exercise on pubs and restaurants to ensure that food and drink prices are being displayed and that customers are served proper measures of beer, wine and spirits.

In the run up to Christmas, Trading Standards Officers will call unannounced to licensed premises to carry out checks. Already, visits are underway in the Londonderry and Strabane areas and will be extended to Tyrone and Fermanagh. Licensees who fail to adhere to the legislation may face prosecution if they do not respond to the officer’s advice and instruction to rectify problems.

Area Trading Standards Officer, Eamon McPartland said: “We aim to ensure that licensees are abiding by the regulations on price display and serving the correct measure.

“These price lists allow customers to clearly assess if they are getting value for money, and to make price comparisons between licensed establishments. We hope the exercise will ensure transparency and fairness for all customers and traders during the festive season and beyond.”

Consumers are also being asked to report any irregularities such as short measure, substitution or counterfeit alcohol and non-display of food and drink prices to the Department’s Consumerline on 0845 600 6262.
