Over 600 drivers caught putting lives at risk

In recent weeks, over 600 drivers have been detected flouting motoring laws in the Greater Belfast area, police revealed today.

Over a period of four weekends, officers detected 296 drivers speeding, 102 motorists driving carelessly and 194 drivers infringing seatbelt laws. Police revealed that 18 drivers had received a notice for prosecution in relation to dangerous driving offences.

Chief Superintendent Wesley Wilson, Head of Urban Region Operational Command Unit said: “It continues to amaze and sadden police officers that some motorists persist in disregarding the basic rules of road safety. All drivers have a responsibility not only for their own safety, but the safety of other road users. It is important that this message gets through.

“If every road user in Northern Ireland did not drink and drive, wore their seatbelt, used more care and attention and did not speed, we would go some significant way to reduce the carnage on our roads.”

Chief Superintendent Wilson confirmed that there would be an increase in road safety operations in the run up to the festive season.
