Lord Mayor condemns attack on fire crew

The Lord Mayor of Belfast has condemned the latest attack on members of the Fire Brigade.

Councillor Tom Ekin was commenting on the attack on fire crew members who were called to Colin Glen Forest Park on Sunday night.

When they arrived they were threatened by about 40 youths and pelted with bottles and stones. The teenagers then urinated over the appliance.

“I really must question the mentality, not only of the young thugs who carried out this attack, but also of their parents, who let them out to roam the streets, congregate in gangs and get their kicks by attacking the members of the emergency services,” Councillor Ekin said.

“It seems to me that many of these attacks are not random acts of senseless violence, but often are pre-meditated and planned, with fire crews being lured into traps and set up for attacks.

“It is imperative that anyone with information about the identity of the thugs responsible co-operates fully with the authorities, to get the perpetrators – rather than our brave firefighters - off the streets immediately.”

A fire service statement described the incident as a "new low" in how firefighters were treated by some in the community.
