Government welcomes progress in criminal justice reform
The Government has welcomed the Justice Oversight Commissioner’s third report which describes good progress in the reform of the criminal justice system in Northern Ireland.
Justice Oversight Commissioner Lord Clyde concluded that the overall position was “one of solid progress” and as more elements of the whole package of reforms begin to fall into place, the picture of the new system of criminal justice is beginning to emerge. Although some areas of delay have been identified, the overall progress remains "commendable," he added.
The report covers the Oversight Commissioner’s third review of the progress achieved in implementing the recommendations of the Criminal Justice Review in Northern Ireland.
Commenting on the report, Secretary of State, Paul Murphy, said: “We welcome the publication of the third report by the Oversight Commissioner. It is pleasing to note that the Justice Oversight Commissioner’s findings verify and indeed commend the continuous progress the criminal justice agencies are making in implementing the recommendations of the Criminal Justice Review.
“The Review’s aim was to enhance public confidence in the justice system in Northern Ireland by creating a modern, transparent and joined-up justice system and to deliver justice effectively and efficiently. This Report establishes that we are well underway in this important task that the Review has set for us.”
Lord Clyde was appointed as Justice Oversight Commissioner in June 2003, to provide public assurance about the implementation of the Review.
His first and second reports were published in January and July 2004 respectively.
