Noise Awareness campaign launched
A new Noise Awareness Campaign which aims to inform noisy neighbours that ‘Too Loud is Not Allowed!’ has been launched by the DOE’s Environment and Heritage Service.
Recently released figures estimate that one in four people in the UK suffer noise disturbance from neighbours. Last year, more than 8,000 complaints were made to district councils in Northern Ireland about noise pollution with the majority of those complaints arising from loud music and television, parties and barking dogs.
Richard Rogers, Chief Executive of EHS, said: “Noise nuisance is for many people a serious issue that causes severe distress. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of what to do if they are affected by excessive noise disturbance.
“The campaign aims to let people know that if the noise is too loud, you’re allowed to complain. Noisy neighbours should also remember that if it’s too loud, then it’s not allowed and you risk action being taken by your local council.”
The Noise Awareness Campaign starts today and will involve adverts on television and in local newspapers over the next month.
As well as raising awareness amongst those affected by noise pollution, it is intended that the campaign will also highlight the responsibility of the wider public to be considerate when engaging in noisy activities, Mr Rogers added.

A DoE report has revealed that almost 80% of people in Northern Ireland regard noisy neighbours to be a serious issue. The Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) has published a report on its first ever Noise Awareness Campaign in February this year to mark Noise Action Week which began today.

Number of noise complaints rise in NI
The Department of Environment (DOE) has today revealed that noise complaints in Northern Ireland have increased by 13% over the last year. The report provides information relating to the number and type of noise complaints received by all 26 district councils in Northern Ireland, from 2005 to 2006.
