Closer links forged in cross-border crime fight
The PSNI and An Garda Síochána today signed joint protocols aimed at further enhancing the close working relationship enjoyed by the two police forces.
The signing is being seen as significant given the ongoing investigations into alleged IRA money laundering in the south and the recent Northern Bank heist in Belfast.
"The implementation of these documents will give officers the opportunity to undertake placements and secondments with their neighbouring police force and the chance to share knowledge and experience in order to tackle crime," PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde said.
"Officers within the Police Service already benefit from an exceptionally close working relationship with their colleagues in An Garda Síochána and I feel this special relationship can only be enhanced by these protocols.”
Mr Orde said he hoped the establishment of placement and secondment opportunities would foster “a better understanding of issues facing police officers throughout the entire island”.
The protocols were signed at Hillsborough Castle by PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde and An Garda Síochána, Commissioner Noel Conroy in the presence of Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Paul Murphy and Irish Justice Minister Michael McDowell.
The framework for the setting down of joint protocols was established on 29 April 2002 when the British and Irish Governments signed the Intergovernmental Agreement on Policing Co-operation.

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.
