Children’s art exhibition launched at City Hall

A unique art exhibition featuring photographs by Belfast and Californian school children will be launched at Belfast City Hall tonight.

The ‘Picturing Peace’ exhibition, which will be opened by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Thomas Ekin, is the culmination of a University of Ulster led arts project encouraging children from both sides of the Atlantic to think about peace using digital photography.

The UU teamed up with the University of California to offer two schools in Northern Ireland -one Catholic and one Protestant - and two schools in Orange County, California, the chance to take part in the project.

Project leader, Jonathan Cummins, a lecturer in time-based media at UU said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity for the children to use photography to create their own artistic interpretations of peace.

“’Picturing Peace’ is an educational programme that lets children use digital cameras to develop their visual intelligence, including observational powers, photography skill and appreciation of images.”

Over the past year pupils from St Vincent de Paul Primary and Ligoniel Primary in north Belfast and the pupils from Lowell Elementary and Turtle Rock Elementary in Orange County, have been interacting with each other through workshops led by the respective universities and via the internet.

The result of their work will be displayed in the ‘Picturing Peace’ exhibition hosted by Belfast City Hall from Monday 11 April until Sunday 17 April.
