Police advise shopkeepers to remain vigilant

Police have advised shopkeepers and staff to remain vigilant over the May Day weekend.

It follows this year’s Easter holidays in which five incendiary type devices were placed in commercial premises in Belfast and Newtownards.

Police are urging key holders to check their premises throughout the trading day and to ensure that a thorough check is carried out before premises are closed.

Anyone who notices anything suspicious is asked to alert a member of staff or the police without delay. Meanwhile, army technical officers made safe a pipe bomb device in Fivemiletown, Co Tyrone on Thursday.

The bomb device and a number of other items were discovered at a house in Greenfield Park before being removed for further examination.

Police are the treating the incident as a racial attack and have appealed to anyone who was in the area from 9am on Thursday and witnessed any suspicious activity to contact Dungannon on 028 8775 2525 or Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
