Man appears in court over football riot

A 20-year-old man has appeared in court today accused of riotous behaviour following last weekend’s local football fixture between Glentoran and Linfield at the Oval.

Steven Moore, from Hood Court in Antrim, appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court on Friday in connection with the trouble which saw hundreds of rival fans clash on the pitch at the end of the game.

A defence solicitor told the court his client had expressed regret and co-operated fully with the police.

Mr Moore was released on bail on condition he does not attend Irish league games, abstains from alcohol and reports to the police three times a week.

Meanwhile, the Irish Football Association (IFA) have ruled that all of Saturday's final Irish Premier League games will start as scheduled at 3pm.

The IFA said they were considering moving this Saturday’s game between Glentoran and Crusaders at Seaview, which would see the league championship handed to the Glens if they win, to an early kick off to avoid repeat of last Saturday’s trouble.

However, measures have been introduced to avert trouble including the closure the social club before and during the match while an all-ticket policy has also been adopted for the game.
