Shooting victim moved out of intensive care

The five-year-old boy shot in a Fermanagh school playground has been has been moved out of intensive care, police have confirmed.

Darragh Summers was in the playground at Mullinaskea Primary School with around 180 other pupils when he was struck in the head with what is believed to have been a stray bullet.

Police said they believed the incident on April 22 was an accident and that Darragh was hit by someone shooting in nearby fields.

He has now been moved out of intensive care and onto a surgical ward at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. It is reported that Darragh, who had to undergo two operations is making good progress and has been asking his family about his favourite TV programmes.

The lead detective investigating the shooting said Darragh's condition was now being described by doctors as "serious but stable".

“We hope that the person who fired the shot will realise that the situation is not as bleak as once feared and we hope that person will now come forward, either directly to police or via a third party,” he added.

Last week, around 51 legally held rifles were seized by police as they continue to investigate the circumstances behind the shooting.

They are also still trying to track down the owners of two vehicles, a grey/green people carrier seen near Garvary Church and a dark blue or purple Toyota four-wheel drive seen at the school gates shortly before the incident.
