Slow start to voting in NI elections
Following a slow start, voting at Northern Ireland’s 620 polling stations is described as "steady" as voters select from the 105 local candidates contesting the province's 18 Westminster seats and the 918 representatives competing for 582 council seats.
Polling stations across the province opened at 7am and will remain so until 10pm.
Voters are reminded to bring valid ID to place their votes. Acceptable voting identification includes:
The more complex counting required for the local council election ballot papers, which uses the proportional representation system, will not commence until the start of next week.

Voters are reminded to bring valid ID to place their votes. Acceptable voting identification includes:
- A current Northern Ireland or Great Britain full driving licence or a Northern Ireland provisional licence, all of which must bear the photograph of the holder;
- A current passport issued by the government of the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland and, for the Local Government election only, a passport issued by a Member State of the European Union;
- A current Senior SmartPass issued under the Northern Ireland Concessionary Fares Scheme;
- A current electoral identity card.

Voting Underway Across Northern Ireland
Poll are open across Northern Ireland as part of the UK-wide General Election. A total of 136 candidates are competing across 18 constituencies. 127 of the candidates represent 11 total political parties, with the other 9 standing as independents. Eligible voters can cast their vote until 10pm tonight.

Electoral Roll Grows - But More Try Fraud
The number of people on Northern Ireland's Electoral Register has increased by over 31,000. The new figures relate to the period 2008/09 and also show that the number of cases of suspected postal voting fraud reported to the PSNI has also risen.

In the aftermath of the Assembly elections voting behaviour will be the subject of a key public seminar taking place on Wednesday 14 March. Queen's University Belfast researcher, Nicholas Whyte, will lead a discussion analyzing tactical voting and ticket splitting among voters.
