Bikesafe campaign to combat motorcycle deaths
The PSNI and Department of the Environment (DoE) have used the first day of practice at the North West 200 races to focus on this year's Bikesafe campaign.
Using the theme – 'Leave the motorcycle racing to the racers!' – the aim is to raise road safety awareness amongst motorcyclists across the country and the many thousands who visit from overseas and to reduce the number of deaths on the roads.
So far this year seven people have died – six motorcyclists and one pillion passenger. This is one up on the figure for the same period last year.
Bikesafe co-ordinator, Constable Stevie Nugent said: "Northern Ireland has a big biking culture.
“Thousands of people regularly enjoy the thrill and freedom of a motorcycle, scooter or moped. Sadly our figures show that the number of deaths and serious injuries is rising. Bikesafe is aimed at all bikers ranging from the novice to the experienced cyclists.
“Police advanced motorcylists give a talk on the proper maintenance and handling of machines. They are then offered an observed ride out motorcyclists are debriefed. Remember, a motorcycle crash doesn't just affect the rider. There are family, friends and of course there may be others involved in the collision. So our appeal is, ride safely."
This year’s campaign, which is being backed by a high impact television advertisement from the Department of the Environment, will culminate in a series of events at the North West 200 running through from Monday’s launch to the big race day on Saturday 21at May.
