Hanson extends 'Lock Out' scheme in NI
New Criminal Justice Minister David Hanson has announced a reduction in the eligibility age for the 'Lock Out Crime Scheme'.
The move reduces the age for the scheme bringing those aged 65 and over and claiming housing benefit and rent or rate rebate into the scheme.
This takes Government funding to tackle crime against older people to more than £3 million and should see around 31,000 people across Northern Ireland eligible.
Mr Hanson said: “I am very pleased to announce this change in the eligibility criteria by reducing the qualifying age from 75 plus to age 65 and over.
“The move, which takes our resource allocation to tackle the crime against older people to more than £3 million, demonstrates the Government’s continuing commitment to improve home security and reduce fear of crime for our older population.
"I hope that everyone who is eligible will take up the opportunity to benefit from the scheme.”
The Lock Out Crime Scheme (LOCS) is the major component in the Government’s Stay Safe Stay Secure campaign, aimed at helping older people to feel safer within the community.
