Londonderry business centre to create over 100 jobs

Over 100 jobs are expected to be created in Londonderry’s Waterside area following the opening of Gortfoyle Business Centre today.

The new three-storey business complex has attracted five major tenants, JMT Direct, Insurety, North West Marketing, Icon E-Business and Riada Recruitment, who anticipate creating over 100 jobs, exceeding the initial target of 35.

The Centre, promoted by Waterside Development Trust and funded by the Peace II Programme through DETI and the International Fund for Ireland, is one of 30 projects across Northern Ireland set up to create new jobs in deprived areas, by providing flexible workspace units for new and expanding businesses.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Wednesday, May 18, Permanent Secretary of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment Bruce Robinson, said: “This project exemplifies the vital contribution that Peace II funding is making to the economic revitalisation of disadvantaged communities. It underpins one of the Department’s core aims, to help create successful indigenous enterprises that will provide both economic wealth and confidence within communities and encourage entrepreneurship.

“The Waterside model is one to be proud of and it can be applied across the North West to assist in confronting the economic challenges faced and to help overcome the economic blows experienced by this area.

“The North West has demonstrated, through its people and resources, that it is an excellent place to do business and the future is looking positive.”

The EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE II) aims to address the legacy of the conflict and take opportunities arising from peace. The Waterside Development Trust received £271,996 of Peace II assistance towards the development, which had a total cost of £698,500.

Established in 1983, Waterside Development Trust, a non-profit cross-community organisation, which combines business, community and education sectors to create and assist employment and new businesses to the North West Region, aims to address the decline of the area.
