Zoo mourns loss of much-loved chimpanzee

One of Belfast's most loved animals, Angela, the city Zoo’s 23-year old chimpanzee, has died suddenly following complications arising from a leg injury.

Five years ago, she was diagnosed with diabetes – a condition relatively rare in chimpanzees - but one which can make certain other conditions potentially more serious.

A little over a week ago, she sustained an internal injury to her leg, for which she received treatment. However, the injury flared up again on Saturday morning, when it was discovered that she had a severe infection.

“In her time at the Zoo, Angela became very well known, and well loved, by all our visitors.” said zookeeper, Linda Frew, who has worked with the chimpanzees for more than ten years.

“When she was diagnosed with diabetes in February 2000, she was so ill that the vet thought she would not survive for more than a couple of weeks without the right treatment. Once I found out she would take her medication in Pepsi Max, it made administering the treatment a lot easier, and she lived a very happy life.”

The Zoo said it wanted to thank Cantrell and Cochrane, who sponsored Angela, and all the staff and the veterinary team who cared and looked after her.
